The modern city was founded in 1950 near the ancient site of Beth Shemesh, a biblical town whose name means "house of the sun". The archaeological mound, Tel Beit Shemesh, overlooks the Sorek Valley, the route that has long linked the hills of Jerusalem with the lowlands towards the Mediterranean.
