The map
Birigui lies in the northwest of São Paulo state, close to the larger city of Araçatuba. The land here is gently rolling and mostly given over to agriculture. The city grew in the early twentieth century along the railway that opened this part of the interior, and its centre follows the tidy rectangular grid typical of Brazilian towns of that era.
Birigui is known throughout Brazil for making children's shoes. The industry grew into the city's economic base, and many factories line the outskirts. Beyond them, the blocks give way quickly to sugarcane and pasture, and the main highway passes nearby.
A Birigui map poster presents that grid with precision. It has evenly spaced streets, a few squares breaking the rhythm, and a sharp outer edge where the city meets the fields. It is an orderly, graphic map, and it works particularly well in the Classic and Blueprint styles.

The city grew along the line that opened the interior of São Paulo. The old railway alignment still influences how the central streets are oriented.
The street grid stops abruptly at the fields. This leaves a clean perimeter and open white space around the city on every side.
