The map

About this Blagoevgrad map poster

Blagoevgrad is in southwestern Bulgaria, where the Bistritsa river comes down from the Rila mountains to meet the Struma valley. From above, the town fills the valley floor and climbs its lower slopes. The river cuts through the centre, and a series of bridges links the two banks. Wooded hillsides press close on several sides, giving the map a strong sense of enclosure.

The town is home to South-West University Neofit Rilski and the American University in Bulgaria, which bring a large student population and a young, walkable centre. On the hillside above the river is Varosha, the old quarter of Revival-era houses and narrow lanes. It keeps the scale of the nineteenth-century town.

A Blagoevgrad map poster brings these layers together: the open pedestrian centre by the river, the tight curves of Varosha, and the newer districts spreading along the valley toward the Struma. It suits anyone who studied or lived here, and it works on its own as a simple portrait of a town in a mountain valley.

01

Bistritsa river

The river runs through the middle of town, crossed by several bridges and lined with walkways. It draws a clear, gently curving line through the densest part of the map.

02

Varosha quarter

The old quarter on the slope above the river has irregular lanes and small plots, a finer and more organic texture than the broad boulevards of the modern centre.

03

Valley and mountains

The town stands where the Bistritsa meets the wider Struma valley. The foothills of Rila and Pirin rise nearby and limit how far the streets can spread.
