Kippax sits on rising ground a short distance east of Leeds, in the part of West Yorkshire where the city gives way to fields, former pit land and scattered villages. On a map it reads as a tight cluster of terraced streets and later housing estates, with a main street running through the middle and green space pressing in from nearly every side.
The village grew with coal mining, and the rows of modest houses built for that industry still shape much of its street pattern. Older still is St Mary's Church, whose walls include stretches of herringbone stonework that point to origins around the time of the Norman Conquest. That mix of deep age and industrial expansion shows in the way old lanes meet newer, more regular blocks.
A Kippax map poster captures a place at an in-between scale: small enough for every cul-de-sac and footpath to register, large enough to show how the village relates to its neighbours, the surrounding farmland and the roads leading toward Leeds and Castleford.
