Ossett stands on rising ground in West Yorkshire, between the larger towns of Wakefield and Dewsbury. Its map has the familiar texture of an old West Riding textile town: a compact centre around the market place and town hall, with rows of terraced houses running out along the main roads. Later estates fill the gaps, and their cul-de-sacs curl against the straighter Victorian streets.
The town's industrial past was built on wool. Ossett was one of the centres of the shoddy and mungo trade, which turned rags into recycled cloth. Traces of that era remain in the layout, in former mill sites and long, straight terraces. To the east, the M1 motorway sweeps past in a smooth curve that contrasts with the town's older, tighter grain.
An Ossett map poster appeals to people who grew up here, commuted from here or simply liked the feel of a Yorkshire town that kept its own identity beside bigger neighbours.
