Sleaford is a market town in Lincolnshire, on the small River Slea. From above, the historic centre is compact, with streets meeting at the market place in front of St Denys' Church, whose spire is one of the oldest stone spires in England. The river winds through the south of the town, past mills and old navigation buildings.
In the eighteenth century the Slea was made navigable, linking Sleaford to the River Witham. Navigation House, the old company office, still stands by the water. On the edges of town there are the scant remains of Sleaford Castle, a former residence of the bishops of Lincoln. Beyond the newer housing, the flat Lincolnshire farmland stretches away in every direction.
A Sleaford map poster shows a classic English market town: roads meeting in a central square, a small river threading through, and later estates arranged around the old core. RAF Cranwell is nearby, so many service families have lived here, and the map means something to them too.
