Boa Viagem lies in the interior of Ceará, in the semi-arid sertão of northeastern Brazil. From above the town is a small, dense grid surrounded by wide open land covered in caatinga scrub, crossed by unpaved roads that lead out to farms and outlying communities.
The name means good journey, a fitting name for a town in a region where distances are long and water is scarce. As across much of the sertão, reservoirs known as açudes dot the landscape. They show on the map as irregular shapes scattered across the dry terrain.
