The map

About this Bogale map poster

Bogale lies in the lower Ayeyarwady delta in southern Myanmar, where the great river splits into many channels before reaching the Andaman Sea. The town sits on the bank of one of these wide channels, and on the map the water dominates: broad rivers, narrower creeks and tidal streams run across the flat land, dividing it into islands and strips.

The town itself is a small, compact grid of streets along the riverbank, with jetties along the water and roads leading only a short distance inland. Much of the travel here has always been by boat, and the map shows why. Around the town, rice fields and mangrove areas fill the land between the channels.

In 2008, Bogale was among the places hit hardest by Cyclone Nargis, which caused severe loss of life across the delta. A Bogale map poster shows the town as it lives with the water: a riverside settlement in a landscape shaped entirely by the delta's channels.

01

Main river channel

The wide channel beside the town is the strongest shape on the map, a broad band of water that sets the town's orientation.

02

Delta waterways

Smaller rivers and creeks branch and rejoin across the surrounding land, forming a pattern that looks almost like the veins of a leaf.

03

Riverside town

The town's streets gather tightly along the bank, a small built-up area that contrasts with the open expanse of water and fields around it.
