The map

About this Bontoc map poster

Bontoc is the capital of Mountain Province in the Cordillera region of northern Luzon, in the Philippines. It lies in a narrow valley of the Chico River, surrounded by steep mountains. The terrain decides everything here, and the town is stretched along the river because there is little flat land available.

On a map the Chico River is the main line, winding through the valley, with roads following its banks and a few bridges connecting both sides. Streets are packed into the valley floor, and winding mountain roads climb out towards Sagada, Banaue and Baguio. Around the town the land rises in steep, almost empty slopes.

The surrounding hills hold stone-walled rice terraces, such as those at nearby Maligcong, and the town has a museum dedicated to the cultures of the Cordillera peoples. A Bontoc map poster shows a mountain town shaped entirely by its river and valley, a good fit for Igorot families and travellers of the northern highlands.
