About this Bor map poster
Bor is a city in eastern Serbia, in hilly, forested country near the borders with Romania and Bulgaria. From above, its most striking feature is industrial. A huge open-pit copper mine lies right beside the town, a stepped crater that dwarfs the residential streets around it. Waste heaps and industrial sites spread along the valley beyond.
Copper mining began here in the early twentieth century, and the town grew around it. Mining and smelting have defined Bor's economy and landscape ever since. Its residential areas are a mix of older houses and postwar apartment blocks. Nearby Bor Lake and the surrounding hills offer a greener counterpoint to the industrial side of the town.
The Bor map poster is unusual among city maps because of that contrast. On one side are the ordinary streets, apartment blocks and parks of the town.
