About this Bordeaux map poster
Bordeaux lies on the Garonne in southwestern France, where the river makes a wide crescent bend before flowing north toward the Gironde estuary. That curve gave the old port its name, Port de la Lune, and it is the defining shape of any map of the city. The historic centre sits on the left bank, following the arc of the quays, with the right bank facing it across the water.
Much of the centre was rebuilt in the eighteenth century with long classical façades, broad squares and straight avenues. In 2007 the Port of the Moon was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On a map, the dense medieval lanes around the cathedral contrast with the wider streets and squares of that later period, and a ring of boulevards curves around the centre further out.
The Pont de Pierre, finished in the early nineteenth century, crosses the river at the centre, and the Pont Jacques Chaban-Delmas, a lift bridge, spans it further downstream. The eighteenth-century square opens onto the quays, and in front of it the shallow Miroir d'eau reflects the façades. It makes a clear gap in the dense streets along the river.

The Pont de Pierre and the Pont Chaban-Delmas cross the Garonne, and a ring of boulevards curves around the centre. Together they give the map a layered structure of arcs.
