The map
Bucaramanga sits on a mesa in the Andean foothills of northeastern Colombia, and on a map the edges of that plateau are unmistakable. The regular grid of calles and carreras runs until the land drops away, especially to the west, where erosion has carved a jagged escarpment. The city looks almost like a tabletop of streets set on uneven ground.
Known in Colombia as the city of parks, Bucaramanga has many small green squares spread through its centre, and they show up as evenly spaced breaks in the block pattern. The urban area continues south into Floridablanca, Girón and Piedecuesta. Together they form a metropolitan chain that follows the valleys and ridges, linked by the highway as one long line.
Founded in the early seventeenth century, the city grew outward along its numbered streets as it became a regional capital. A Bucaramanga map poster shows the tension between that tidy grid and the dramatic terrain around it, with ravines, slopes and winding roads pressing in on every side. On this map the geography is as visible as the city.
The western rim of the mesa appears as a sharp, irregular boundary where the orderly grid stops and the land falls away into eroded gullies and green slopes.
Small, regularly placed squares punctuate the central grid. This is the pattern behind Bucaramanga's nickname, and it gives the map a steady rhythm of open spaces.
To the south, Floridablanca, Girón and Piedecuesta extend the urban area along valleys and ridges, turning the city into a long, branching shape.
