Square blocks of about 100 metres repeat across most of the city. From above, this creates a fine, uniform grid broken only by diagonals and parks.

The map
Buenos Aires sits on the western shore of the Río de la Plata, an estuary so wide it looks like the sea on a map. The city itself is a nearly endless grid of square blocks, known locally as manzanas. This pattern is broken only by a few diagonal avenues, parks and rail lines, which makes the map both simple and dense.
Avenida 9 de Julio cuts through the centre as one of the widest streets in the world. Around Plaza de Mayo, the historic core keeps a tighter layout near the river. To the east, Puerto Madero turns old docks into long rectangles of water. In the north, Palermo's parks form large green shapes along the shore.
The Riachuelo marks the southern edge of the capital, and Avenida General Paz forms a ring road along most of its land boundary. Neighbourhoods such as San Telmo and La Boca sit in the south, near the river. A Buenos Aires map poster shows a city built block by block, with the estuary as its edge.

One of the world's widest avenues runs north–south through the centre, cutting a clear band through the grid near the Obelisco.
The former port basins form a line of long rectangular docks between the centre and the river, now surrounded by newer buildings and promenades.
