The map
Bulung’ur Shahri is the administrative centre of the Bulung’ur district in the Samarqand Region of Uzbekistan. It lies in the fertile Zarafshan valley, northeast of Samarkand, and the map shows a landscape built by water. Irrigation canals run across the valley, and the fields they feed are divided into tidy strips and blocks.
The town has a fairly regular street plan, with wide main roads and blocks of housing, much of it from the Soviet period, alongside traditional mahalla neighbourhoods of courtyard houses. Along the edges, streets fade into orchards, gardens and farm lanes that follow the canal lines.
A Bulung’ur Shahri map poster shows how closely a Central Asian town is tied to its water supply. Canals give the composition clear diagonal and curving lines, and the town grid sits neatly among them. It's a considered gift for anyone with roots in the Samarkand region.
Canals drawn from the Zarafshan river system cross the landscape and shape the fields around them, adding long flowing lines to the map.
The central streets form a broadly regular layout with wide main roads, which shows up as an orderly block at the centre of the poster.
On the town edge, houses mix with orchards and cultivated plots, giving the map a gradual transition from built-up area to countryside.
