About this Butaleja map poster
Butaleja is the main town of a district in Uganda's Eastern Region, on low ground west of the Mount Elgon foothills. On the map, it is a small cluster of streets on nearly level country. Around it lie farms, swampy patches and watercourses that swell in the rainy season and shrink in the dry months.
The district is known for rice. The Doho irrigation scheme, supplied by the Manafwa River, lies within it, and its fields and channels create some of the most regular patterns in this part of the country. Across the rest of the land, footpaths and small roads link scattered homesteads.
