Danao lies on the eastern coast of Cebu, north of Cebu City, on a narrow strip of flat land between the Camotes Sea and the island's mountainous interior. From above the built-up area hugs the shore, with the main road running parallel to the coast and streets reaching inland only as far as the terrain allows before the hills take over.
The city's port is the main departure point for ferries to the Camotes Islands, and the harbour forms a clear, compact shape on the waterfront. Rivers descend from the hills across the coastal plain, and the town centre gathers close to the sea around its plaza and church, following the pattern of many Spanish-era Philippine towns.
