Godalming lies in the valley of the River Wey in south-west Surrey. On the map the river and its water meadows run along the town's northern side, while the historic centre forms a small knot of narrow streets on slightly higher ground. Residential roads climb the surrounding slopes in curving lines, and wooded hills close in around the edges.
The town has a long history as a market and wool town, and its High Street keeps many timber-framed and older brick buildings. At its centre stands the Pepperpot, the former town hall of 1814. In 1881 Godalming became one of the first places in the world with a public electricity supply for street lighting. Charterhouse School occupies a large site on the hill to the north.
