The map
Caleta Olivia lies on the Atlantic coast of Santa Cruz Province in Argentine Patagonia, facing the Gulf of San Jorge. The map is shaped by two edges: the sea on one side and the dry, open steppe on the other. The city fills the strip between them with a grid of streets that runs parallel to the shore.
The town was founded in the early twentieth century, and it grew quickly after oil was found in the surrounding basin. The oil industry still defines much of its economy. Its best-known landmark is a large statue of an oil worker, known locally as El Gorosito, which stands on a roundabout in the centre.
A Caleta Olivia map poster shows a city pressed between water and plateau, its streets following the curve of the bay. The long coastline and the sharp edge where town meets steppe make a strong, graphic composition that is easy to read from across a room.
The long, gently curving shoreline forms the eastern edge of the city. It is a clean line between streets and open sea.
The streets form a regular grid aligned with the coast. It stretches along the shore rather than inland.
A large roundabout at the heart of the town holds the oil worker monument. It is a clear focal point in the grid.
