About this Carleton University map poster

Carleton University occupies a narrow strip of land in the south of Ottawa where the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal run close together. On a map the campus looks almost like a peninsula, with the river along one edge, the canal along the other, and a dense cluster of academic buildings, residences and sports fields between them.

The university was founded in 1942 and moved to this site later, which explains its layout. There is no historic quad. The plan is a modern arrangement of buildings linked by internal roads and by an extensive network of underground tunnels, which lets students cross the campus in winter without going outside.

Just north of the campus the canal widens into Dow's Lake, and the O-Train line runs along the western edge with a station of its own. A Carleton University map poster puts all of this into one frame, so the water, the rail line and the campus buildings read together as a single place.

01

Two waterways

The Rideau River curves along the eastern side of the campus and the straighter line of the Rideau Canal runs to the west. Together they give the map a strong natural frame.

02

Tunnel network

Much of the campus is linked by underground pedestrian tunnels. They do not appear on a street map, but they explain why the buildings sit so close together in one connected cluster.

03

Dow's Lake

North of the university the Rideau Canal opens into Dow's Lake, a broad basin that adds an open stretch of water to the upper part of the frame.
