About this Carletonville map poster
Carletonville lies on the highveld west of Johannesburg, in Gauteng's Merafong municipality. From above, the town is a fairly regular planned grid set in open grassland, with townships and mining villages scattered around it and large mine properties filling the spaces between.
It was founded in the mid-twentieth century to serve the gold mines of the Far West Rand, among the deepest in the world. A Carletonville map poster shows the town centre alongside the shaft complexes, tailings dams and service roads that dominate the surrounding landscape.
