The map
Carouge lies directly south of Geneva, separated from the city by the River Arve. In the late eighteenth century, when it belonged to the Kingdom of Sardinia, it was redeveloped as a planned town intended to compete with Geneva. That plan is still clear on a map: a regular grid of streets crossing at right angles, with blocks around inner courtyards.
The architecture reflects that origin. Low houses with arcades, small squares and courtyard gardens give the old town a noticeably Mediterranean feel, very different from Geneva across the river. Artisans, galleries and markets fill the streets, and the Place du Marché is still the centre of local life.
Around the historic grid, newer districts and roads extend toward the rest of the Geneva region, while the Arve curves along the northern edge. A Carouge map poster shows one of the clearest examples of planned eighteenth-century urbanism in Switzerland, framed by the river.
The old town's straight streets and regular blocks were planned in the eighteenth century and still form a remarkably clean pattern at the centre of the map.
The fast glacial river curves along Carouge's northern side, marking the historic boundary between the Sardinian town and Geneva.
Many blocks enclose gardens and inner courtyards, which appear as open centres within the dense grid, one of the district's defining features.
