The map
Cathedral City sits in the middle of the Coachella Valley, between Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage. Its map shows a desert city built for cars. Wide arterial roads form a large grid, residential streets curve inside it, and golf courses and gated communities appear as looping, self-contained shapes. Interstate 10 marks the northern edge.
The city takes its name from Cathedral Canyon, a canyon at its southern edge whose rock formations reminded early visitors of a cathedral. The Whitewater River wash, usually dry, cuts diagonally across the city as a broad channel, and the Santa Rosa Mountains rise steeply to the south, where the street grid ends.
A Cathedral City map poster holds all of this in one frame: the ruled arterials, the curling cul-de-sacs, the pale sweep of the wash and the abrupt stop at the mountains. It is a map of the modern American desert, spacious and precise, and it looks especially good in the Sand or Paper styles.

The main north–south arterial runs from the interstate toward the mountains. Along with the other arterials, it defines the large blocks that organise the city.
To the south, the streets end at the Santa Rosa foothills. The sharp boundary between the grid and open terrain is one of the most distinctive features on the map.
