About this Centennial map poster
Centennial is one of the newest cities in Colorado. It was incorporated in 2001 from Arapahoe County neighbourhoods that had long been part of Denver's southern suburbs, and at the time it was described as the largest incorporation in American history. The name comes from Colorado's nickname, the Centennial State, because Colorado joined the Union in 1876, a century after independence.
From above, the city looks nothing like an old downtown grid. Arterial roads such as Arapahoe Road and Dry Creek Road run in long straight lines across a broad grid. The spaces between them fill with looping residential streets, crescents and cul-de-sacs. Interstate 25 and E-470 pass along its edges, and Centennial Airport, one of the busiest general aviation airports in the country, occupies a wide open area.
