The map

About this Český Těšín map poster

Český Těšín is the western half of a town that was split in 1920. The border between Czechoslovakia and Poland was drawn along the Olza river, which left the old centre on the eastern bank as Polish Cieszyn. The streets on the western bank became a separate Czech town, and the river still runs between them like a seam.

On a map the arrangement reads at once. The Czech side spreads west from the riverbank, organised around its railway station and the streets that grew up near it after the split. Bridges cross the Olza at short intervals and carry streets that continue straight into the neighbouring country, where they take on Polish names.

A Český Těšín map poster can show both banks together. The meandering river, the bridges and two street networks that once belonged to one town make a composition that explains its history without a single word of text.

01

The Olza border

The river winds north through the middle of the map and forms the international boundary. Czech streets sit on its left bank, Polish Cieszyn on its right.

02

Cross-border bridges

Several bridges link the two towns. Since both countries joined the Schengen area, people cross them on foot every day, and on paper they look like ordinary street crossings.

03

Station quarter

The railway line and the station district anchor the Czech side. Much of the town's street pattern grew around them after the historic centre was left across the river.
