The map

About this Cetinje map poster

Cetinje lies in a karst valley in the mountains of southern Montenegro, at the foot of Mount Lovćen and a short drive inland from the Bay of Kotor and Budva. From above, the town fills a flat field enclosed by rocky, wooded slopes, and its streets form a small, orderly grid that looks almost surprising in such rugged terrain. Roads leave the valley in tight bends, climbing towards the coast and the mountain.

Founded in the late fifteenth century around a monastery, Cetinje was for centuries the seat of Montenegrin rulers and remained the country's capital until 1918. Foreign legations were built here in the years around 1900, and many of their buildings still line the streets. Today the town is Montenegro's historical and cultural capital and hosts the official residence of the president.

On paper, the contrast between town and mountain is what makes Cetinje so appealing. A Cetinje map poster shows the neat streets and gardens set within their enclosing basin, with switchback roads leading towards Lovćen, where the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš crowns one of the peaks. It is a fitting choice for Montenegrins at home and abroad, and for travellers who have driven those winding roads.

01

Orderly town grid

Cetinje's streets form a compact, regular plan across the flat valley floor, with parks and former legation buildings giving the centre a spacious feel.

02

Karst basin

The town sits in a closed field ringed by rocky slopes, so the built area appears as a clear island within the surrounding mountain terrain.

03

Roads to Lovćen

Winding roads climb out of the valley in tight switchbacks towards Mount Lovćen and the coast, adding dramatic curves to the edges of the map.
