The map

About this Charlottesville map poster

Charlottesville sits in the Piedmont of central Virginia, with the Blue Ridge Mountains rising to the west. It is best known as the home of the University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson. His hilltop house, Monticello, stands just outside the city. Together the university and Monticello form a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an unusual distinction for a city of this size.

The city has no single grid on the map. Streets follow ridges and creek valleys and curve between older neighbourhoods. The historic downtown keeps a denser, straighter pattern around the long pedestrian Downtown Mall. To the west, the university grounds form their own district, and the Rivanna River traces the eastern side of the city.

A Charlottesville map poster shows how these pieces fit together: the compact downtown, the West Main Street corridor leading toward the university, the looping residential lanes and the green edges of the surrounding county. This college town was shaped as much by its hills as by planning, and the map rewards a close look.

The Academical Village

Jefferson's original university plan sets two rows of pavilions along a terraced lawn, closed at one end by the domed Rotunda. The symmetrical layout stands out among the looser streets around it.

02

Downtown Mall

This former main street is now a long brick pedestrian walkway lined with shops and restaurants. It runs as a straight spine through the centre of the old downtown.

03

Rivanna River

The river runs along the eastern edge of the city. Its wooded banks and riverside trails give the map a natural boundary on that side.

Why Charlottesville

A map that means something

For alumni, the map recalls the years spent between the Lawn, the Corner and a first apartment. For residents, it is simply home at the foot of the Blue Ridge. It makes a considered graduation or housewarming gift.

Personalise the title and subtitle with a class year, a name or a date, and point the coordinates line to a dorm, a house or a wedding venue. Choose one of five styles, from Classic black & white and Noir to Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Order it as a $9 digital file or as a printed poster with an optional wooden frame.
