About this Chhanerā map poster
Chhanerā lies in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, in the Nimar region. It is closely linked to the story of Harsud, an old town that was submerged by the rising waters of the Indira Sagar dam in the early 2000s. Many of Harsud's residents were resettled here, and the town became widely known as New Harsud.
The relocation of Harsud in 2004 drew wide attention in India as one of the most visible cases of displacement caused by a large dam. The new town was laid out quickly, and its map shows it: broad straight roads, regular plots and clearly defined sectors, in contrast to the organic lanes that Harsud had built up over centuries.
