About this Chokwé map poster
Chokwé lies on the south bank of the Limpopo River in Gaza Province, southern Mozambique. From above the town is surrounded by one of the most distinctive landscapes in the country: long, regular fields and irrigation canals that stretch across the floodplain in every direction.
The town is the centre of the Chokwé irrigation scheme, the largest in Mozambique, built to farm the fertile soil of the Limpopo valley. In 2000 the town was badly flooded when the Limpopo overflowed, an event that remains an important part of local memory.
