Achinsk Map Poster & Print
Achinsk is in the west of Krasnoyarsk Krai, on the Chulym River, where the Trans-Siberian Railway crosses it. It was founded in the seventeenth century as a Russian fortress. The older part of the city sits close to the river, on a regular grid of streets that suits a provincial Siberian town. Newer districts of apartment blocks spread out beyond it onto higher ground.
The Chulym is the strongest feature on the map. It winds along the edge of the city in broad loops, with low floodplain and oxbow lakes on the far bank. The railway and its yards form a second, straight line that sets the direction of the industrial zones. The city is known for its large alumina refinery, which is a noticeable block on the outskirts.
