Sek’ot’a is the main town of the Wag Hemra zone in Ethiopia's Amhara region. It sits in rugged highland country, and the town's layout responds to the terrain: roads follow contours and ridges, and neighbourhoods spread across uneven ground rather than in a regular grid. Around it, the land drops into valleys and gorges.
The Wag area has long been associated with the Agaw people and has its own historical ruling line. The region is dry and mountainous, and settlements like Sek’ot’a act as local centres for markets, administration and services for a wide surrounding area.
