Van Map Poster
Van sits at around 1,700 metres on the eastern side of Lake Van, the largest lake in Turkey. It is a highly alkaline soda lake with no outlet to the sea. The modern city lies a few kilometres inland from the shore, laid out in broad blocks and long avenues, and the flat expanse of the lake fills the western side of any wider map.
Between the city and the water stands the Rock of Van, a long limestone ridge crowned by the fortress of Tushpa, capital of the Urartian kingdom nearly three thousand years ago. The old walled town at its foot was destroyed during the First World War, and the present city grew further east. That history explains the open ground between the rock and the modern streets.

The city is also known for the Van cat, a white breed that often has eyes of two different colours, and locals are happy to mention it.
