The map

About this Coeur d'Alene map poster

Coeur d'Alene sits where the north shore of Lake Coeur d'Alene meets the source of the Spokane River. From above the town is a tidy grid of streets that stops at the waterline. To the south the lake stretches away between forested hills in long arms and bays, so on a map it is a large, irregular dark shape pressing into the corner of the town.

Just east of downtown, Tubbs Hill rises as a wooded headland into the lake, surrounded by trails, and it appears on the map as a green knot with no streets at all. West of the centre the Spokane River leaves the lake and heads towards Washington. Interstate 90 runs along the north side of town, a firm line above the grid.

A Coeur d'Alene map poster works because the town's shape is so clear: streets on one side, water on the other, and a hill between them. The name comes from French fur traders and is usually translated as "heart of an awl". The lake resort here is known for its floating golf green, set on a movable island offshore.

01

The lakeshore

The downtown grid ends abruptly at Lake Coeur d'Alene. The shoreline, with its marinas, beaches and boardwalk, is the sharpest edge on the poster and gives the whole map its orientation.

02

Tubbs Hill

A forested headland just east of downtown, crossed only by walking trails. On the map it is a solid green shape between the town and the open water.

03

Spokane River outlet

On the west side of town the lake drains into the Spokane River, which starts its run west towards Spokane. Its first curves stand out as a thin line leaving the lake.

Why Coeur d'Alene

A map that means something

Coeur d'Alene is a place people come back to: summer weeks on the lake, a wedding by the water, a move to the Inland Northwest. The combination of lake, headland and grid is recognisable at a glance.

Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates to mark a cabin, a year or a family tradition. Choose from five styles; Blueprint and Noir give the lake extra depth. Get the HD files for $9, or order a matte print with an optional wooden frame.
