The map
Cung Kiệm lies in Bắc Ninh province, on the level plain of the Red River Delta north-east of Hanoi. The landscape is almost completely flat, so the map is shaped by water, not hills. Ponds, canals and small rivers are scattered among the fields, and settlements cluster tightly on the drier ground between them.
Traditional delta villages are compact knots of narrow, winding lanes, often built around a pond and a communal house and surrounded by rice paddies. In recent decades, newer roads and industrial zones have spread across the province, adding straight lines and large rectangular plots. A Cung Kiệm map poster shows both patterns side by side.
Bắc Ninh is known as the home of quan họ, a form of call-and-response folk singing recognised by UNESCO, and its villages keep strong local traditions. From above, the area reads as a fine, intricate texture with no single town centre, which makes it an unusual and interesting subject for a black-and-white print.
Narrow, twisting lanes fill the older settlements, creating small, dense patches of linework that contrast with the open fields around them.
Ponds and canals are scattered across the plain. They appear as small solid shapes and fine threads that give the map rhythm and depth.
Wide modern roads cut across the delta in long straight lines. They link the area to Bắc Ninh city and Hanoi and frame the older village pattern.

Why Cung Kiệm
For families from Bắc Ninh living in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City or overseas, a map of the home commune is a meaningful piece for the wall, especially as new construction changes the landscape so quickly.
