The map

About this Danghara map poster

Danghara is a town in Khatlon Province in southern Tajikistan, in a wide valley between ranges of low hills. From above, the town is laid out along a regular pattern of straight streets and long blocks, typical of planned towns of the Soviet period, with a centre of public buildings and markets and residential districts around it.

Around the edges, the map changes character. Irrigated fields stretch across the valley floor in long strips, fed by canals that show up as thin straight lines, while the hills beyond remain largely bare. The contrast between the watered green ground and the dry slopes is strong on the ground, and on the map it becomes a contrast between dense and empty.

Danghara is widely known in Tajikistan as the birthplace of President Emomali Rahmon. A Danghara map poster, though, focuses on the town itself: its planned grid, the roads that link it with Dushanbe and Kulob, and the valley agriculture that has supported the area for generations.

01

Planned street grid

Long straight streets and rectangular blocks give the town a clear, orderly layout. It is easy to read and prints crisply in any style.

02

Irrigation canals

Canals cross the valley in thin straight lines, separating long field strips. They add fine, regular detail to the land around the town.

03

Valley and hills

The flat irrigated valley meets bare hills on either side, giving the composition a clear sense of the surrounding terrain.
