The map

About this Debre Tabor map poster

Debre Tabor is a town in the Amhara region of northern Ethiopia, set at high altitude in the South Gondar area. It lies on the highlands east of Lake Tana, not far from the massif of Mount Guna. On a map, the town is a compact grouping of streets on raised ground, surrounded by open farmland and hills.

The town has a long history as a seat of regional rulers in the nineteenth century and was one of the important centres of the Ethiopian highlands. Today it is a zonal centre and home to a university. The main roads run out across the plateau, linking Debre Tabor with Bahir Dar, Gondar and the countryside around them.

A Debre Tabor map poster shows a highland town in simple, clear lines. The centre forms a modest network of streets, and the roads extend outward across the uplands, with the terrain rising and falling beyond. It is an understated image of a place with deep roots in Ethiopian history.

01

Highland ridge

The town sits on elevated ground, and its streets follow the rises and dips of the terrain. The altitude is part of what gives Debre Tabor its cool climate and wide views.

02

Radiating roads

Main roads lead out of the centre toward Bahir Dar, Gondar and the surrounding plateau. They form the long lines that connect the town to the region.

03

Plateau farmland

Open fields and scattered villages cover the highlands around the town. On the wider map, their open texture frames the denser streets at the centre.
