The map

About this Dimitrovgrad map poster

Dimitrovgrad in southern Bulgaria is a young town by European standards. It was created in 1947 by merging existing villages into a single new settlement named after Georgi Dimitrov, and it was built largely by youth brigades. The Maritsa River runs along its edge through the flat Upper Thracian Plain.

That planned origin shows clearly from above. Wide, straight avenues, large rectangular blocks and generous green spaces give the centre an ordered, deliberate look, quite different from the winding cores of older Bulgarian towns. Industrial areas, historically including large chemical works, lie beyond the residential districts.

A Dimitrovgrad map poster captures a piece of twentieth-century urban planning. The strong geometry of the centre, the curve of the Maritsa and the transition to industry and farmland give the print clear structure and a story.

01

Planned centre

Broad avenues and orderly blocks laid out in the late 1940s and 1950s form a clearly designed core that reads almost like an architectural plan.

02

The Maritsa

Bulgaria's major southern river flows beside the town. Its curving course and bridges form a natural boundary on the map.

03

Industrial edge

Large industrial sites sit apart from the housing districts and appear as big, simple shapes with long rail and road links.

Why Dimitrovgrad

A map that means something

Dimitrovgrad appeals to people who grew up in its apartment blocks and to anyone interested in planned cities. Its layout is distinctive enough to stand as a design object in its own right.

Personalise the title, the subtitle and the coordinates, then choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits a town that began on a drawing board.
