The map

About this Dongning map poster

Dongning lies in the far southeast of Heilongjiang, close to the Russian border and the region of Primorsky Krai. The Suifen River runs past the town before flowing east into Russia, and it curves through a valley flanked by forested hills. The built-up area sits on the flat land by the river in a compact, mostly regular grid.

The town is a border crossing point, and the road east to the Russian side shapes part of its layout. Trade across the border influenced its markets and some of its newer districts. Beyond the valley floor, farmland and wooded slopes fill the map.

Dongning is also known for the remains of large fortifications built by the Japanese Kwantung Army in the 1930s, part of a chain along the Soviet frontier. A Dongning map poster presents a frontier town between river and hills, a clear and compact image of a place at the edge of a country.

01

Suifen River

The river winds through the valley beside the town and on toward Russia, the main natural line on the map, with bends and side channels.

02

Border road

Roads leading east toward the crossing with Russia give the town an outward-pointing axis, a reminder of its role as a frontier trading point.

03

Hills and valley

Forested uplands rise on both sides of the valley. On the poster they leave open space that keeps attention on the river and the grid.
