The map

About this Elk Grove map poster

Elk Grove lies in the Sacramento Valley just south of Sacramento, bounded to the west by Interstate 5 and crossed by State Route 99. Its map works at two scales. A wide grid of arterial roads divides the city into large blocks, and within each block are the curving streets, cul-de-sacs and small parks of planned neighbourhoods built largely since the 1980s.

The community dates to the mid-nineteenth century, when a stage stop and hotel were established here, and Old Town Elk Grove still keeps a small historic main street. The city incorporated in 2000 and grew quickly into one of the larger cities in the Sacramento region. To the south, the Cosumnes River Preserve protects wetlands and oak woodland along one of the few undammed rivers that flow from the Sierra Nevada.

An Elk Grove map poster turns suburban growth into an intricate pattern: loops and crescents nested inside long straight roads, lakes and greenbelts in the Laguna area, and the freeways drawn as clean, continuous lines. From above the city has a surprising rhythm, especially in a fine-lined minimalist print that shows each neighbourhood's own design.

01

Arterial grid

Major roads such as Elk Grove Boulevard and Laguna Boulevard form a broad grid across the city. They divide it into large blocks, each framing its own neighbourhood.

02

Curving subdivisions

Inside the grid, residential streets bend into loops, courts and cul-de-sacs. They create the detailed, almost ornamental texture typical of California suburbs.

03

Old Town

The historic main street along Elk Grove Boulevard, east of Highway 99, forms a small, straight-lined older core. It contrasts with the newer neighbourhoods around it.
