El mapa
Ampara is the main town of Ampara District in Sri Lanka's Eastern Province. Its modern form is closely tied to the Gal Oya development scheme of the mid-twentieth century, which dammed the Gal Oya river and opened large areas to irrigated rice farming. The map shows a town organised around water.
The streets are fairly regular, a sign of planned growth, and the town is ringed by paddy fields divided into fine rectangular plots. Irrigation tanks and channels appear as smooth shapes and thin lines across the flat land, and the large reservoir of Senanayake Samudra lies further inland to the west.
An Ampara map poster brings out that relationship between town and irrigation. The street grid sits in the middle, the tanks give it soft rounded forms, and the canals trace long lines to the fields. It is a clear, structured picture of a landscape built for farming.
Reservoirs near the town appear as broad, smooth shapes on the map, a characteristic feature of Sri Lanka's long tradition of water management.
Surrounding rice fields are divided into small rectangular plots, a fine repeating pattern that extends well beyond the edge of town.
Irrigation channels from the Gal Oya system run across the plain, thin straight lines that connect the water to the fields.
