Ancient reservoirs
Large tanks such as Tissa Wewa, Nuwara Wewa and Basawakkulama surround the city, broad irregular shapes that dominate the map and show the scale of old irrigation.

Anuradhapura Map Poster & Print
Anuradhapura was the capital of Sri Lanka's first great kingdom for more than a thousand years, and its sacred city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From above, the ancient area is marked by huge circular stupas such as the Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya, and by broad open grounds of ruins, monasteries and trees. It is one of the major pilgrimage centres of Buddhism.
The ancient engineers built large reservoirs, called wewas or tanks, to store water on this dry plain. Several still surround the city, including Tissa Wewa, Nuwara Wewa and Basawakkulama, and they are the largest shapes on the map. At the centre of the sacred area stands the Sri Maha Bodhi, a fig tree believed to have been grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha reached enlightenment.
An Anuradhapura map poster puts the ancient and modern cities side by side: the loose, open layout of the sacred grounds, the rounded shapes of the reservoirs and the newer grid of streets laid out beside them. It is a map full of meaning, but visually it stays calm, with water and open space doing most of the work.

Stupas and sacred grounds
Great dagobas and monastery ruins stand across wide open grounds, forming a spacious and quiet zone at the heart of the plan.
The new town
The modern town was built beside the ancient city, with a more regular street pattern that contrasts clearly with the open heritage area.
