Aschersleben lies on the northeastern edge of the Harz foothills, in the farming country of Saxony-Anhalt. It is counted among the oldest documented towns in the state, and its plan still shows that age. The historic centre forms a compact oval of irregular streets and squares, and the later districts spread out around it in a broader, more regular pattern.
The line of the old fortifications can still be traced on the map, because a green ring and several preserved towers mark where the walls once stood. The small river Eine passes through the town. In 2010 Aschersleben hosted the state garden show, which reworked some of its central green spaces into parks that still sit between the old town and the newer quarters.
