‘Aţārūt lies in the central highlands of the West Bank, just north of Jerusalem. On a map, the area is defined by hills. Roads bend along the contours, blocks of housing sit on terraced slopes, and the pattern of streets changes wherever the ground rises or falls.
This part of the highlands is densely developed, and neighbourhoods, main roads and open ground sit close together. The major routes running north from Jerusalem through the area form the strongest lines on the map, while smaller streets branch off into the hills in loops and short switchbacks.
