Baicheng lies in the northwest of Jilin Province, where the Songnen Plain opens toward Inner Mongolia. The land is almost completely flat, and the map shows it. Wide avenues run in long straight lines and divide the city into large rectangular blocks, with few hills or coastlines to bend them. The Taoer River crosses the wider area and adds one of the few curves to the landscape.
The city grew as a rail junction, and several lines converge here on their way across the northeast. On the map their gentle curves and yards stand out against the rigid street pattern. A Baicheng map poster shows a plains city where the railways and planned avenues decide the layout.
