Bayiji lies east of the city of Xuzhou in northern Jiangsu, in a region whose landscape was shaped over centuries by the Yellow River, which flowed through Xuzhou until it changed course in the 1850s. The land here is level and closely farmed, and the town appears on the map as a cluster of streets set among waterways, ditches and fields.
Water management is the key to reading this map. Canals and drainage channels run in straight and gently curving lines across the countryside, and many roads follow their banks. Around the town, these lines combine with field boundaries into a lattice that repeats across the whole plain, broken only by villages and the town itself.
