El mapa
Chernyakhovsk is a town in Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast, known until 1946 as Insterburg, when it was renamed after the Soviet general Ivan Chernyakhovsky. It lies at the point where the Instruch and the Angrapa rivers meet to form the Pregolya, which then flows west towards Kaliningrad and the Baltic Sea.
The town grew around a castle of the Teutonic Order, whose remains still stand near the rivers. From above, the older centre shows a compact pattern of streets from the German period, while Soviet-era districts extend outward in larger blocks. The town is also an important railway junction, and its lines fan out across the surrounding plain.
A Chernyakhovsk map poster highlights the meeting of waters, the dense historic core and the lines of the railway. Around the town, the flat farmland of the former East Prussia leaves open space in the composition. It is a thoughtful keepsake for anyone with family ties to Insterburg or Chernyakhovsk.
The Instruch and Angrapa rivers join here to form the Pregolya. On the poster their meeting point creates a distinctive Y-shaped confluence, the natural centre of the map.
The older streets from the town's time as Insterburg form a compact, irregular core near the rivers and the castle remains, contrasting with the larger Soviet blocks further out.
Several rail lines converge on Chernyakhovsk, fanning out across the plain. Their long, straight paths give the composition a strong structure and a sense of connection.
