Dover is the capital of Delaware, in the centre of the state in Kent County. From above, the historic core is laid out around The Green, an open square dating from the colonial period, with a regular grid of downtown streets stretching north and south. The St. Jones River winds along the eastern edge of the city, and small lakes and ponds break up the suburban areas around it.
The city was laid out in the seventeenth century on a plan associated with William Penn. Dover's statehouse and legislative buildings stand near The Green. Beyond downtown, the map is shaped by two large sites: Dover Air Force Base to the southeast, with its long runways, and Dover Motor Speedway, the oval track nicknamed the Monster Mile.
