The Olt River
The river forms the town's eastern boundary and sets its orientation. The wide channel and its floodplain run down the whole length of the map and give the composition a strong vertical line.

El mapa
From above, Drăgăşani shows the shape of a valley town. The Olt runs north to south along its eastern edge, and the built area stretches parallel to the river rather than spreading outward in a ring. The main road follows the valley floor, and side streets branch off it toward the rising ground to the west, where the town thins out into fields and orchards.
The hills west of the town have been planted with vines for centuries, and Drăgăşani gives its name to one of Romania's best-known wine regions. On a map this shows up as a quieter band of land with scattered lanes and small plots. A Drăgăşani map poster keeps that transition visible, from a denser centre near the river to the looser pattern of the vineyard slopes.
The town also has a place in the story of Balkan independence. In 1821 the Sacred Band, a volunteer unit of the Greek Filiki Eteria, fought an Ottoman force near Drăgăşani and was defeated. Today the town is a local centre for the south of Vâlcea County, and its plan is modest and readable: one river, one valley road and a grid of streets pressed between water and hills.
The river forms the town's eastern boundary and sets its orientation. The wide channel and its floodplain run down the whole length of the map and give the composition a strong vertical line.
A main road runs through the town parallel to the river and links it to the rest of the Olt valley. Most of the street network hangs off this one line, which gives the town its elongated outline.
West of the centre, the streets open out as the ground rises into the hills of the Drăgăşani wine region. The lanes are sparser there, and the lines of the map loosen into a rural pattern.
