El mapa
Dubno is one of the oldest towns in Volhynia, in Rivne Oblast in western Ukraine. It lies on the Ikva river, which loops around the historic centre and once provided a natural defence. Dubno Castle, a stone fortress built by the Ostrogski princes, still stands above the river on the edge of the old town.
The town appears in Nikolai Gogol's Taras Bulba, where the Cossacks besiege Dubno, and in 1941 the surrounding area saw one of the largest tank battles of the early Second World War. On the map these histories sit beneath a calm layout of streets, with the old centre on higher ground and newer districts extending away from the river.
A Dubno map poster shows the castle, the curve of the Ikva and the compact historic core in one view. In black and white the river forms a strong natural line, marshes and meadows border it, and the street pattern becomes more regular towards the outskirts.
The castle stands on a promontory above the Ikva river, its bastions and walls forming a distinctive geometric shape at the edge of the old town.
The Ikva river curves around Dubno's historic centre, shaping the town's outline and bordering it with low, open land along the water.
Within the loop of the river the streets of the old town form a compact network, with churches and historic buildings marking the heart of the settlement.

Por qué Dubno
A map of Dubno suits people from Volhynia, readers who know it from Taras Bulba and anyone with family ties to the town. The castle and river make the layout immediately recognisable.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps in Ukrainian, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper and Sand suit the historic character of the old centre.
