Dunhao lies in the hill country of northeastern Chongqing, where towns rarely get to spread out. From above, the built-up area follows the flat ground along valleys and watercourses. Contour-hugging roads link it to the villages around it. The street pattern is compact and practical, shaped more by the slopes around it than by any master plan.
This is a place defined by terrain. On a monochrome print the empty space matters as much as the lines: steep, wooded ground surrounds the settlement and leaves the town as a dense cluster of short streets. Longer roads leave that cluster in switchbacks and curves. The contrast between the tight core and the looping approach roads gives the composition its structure.
