Everett sits on a peninsula in Snohomish County, Washington, north of Seattle. On the map its shape is unusually clear. Port Gardner Bay and Possession Sound lie to the west, and the braided channels and sloughs of the Snohomish River delta curve around the north and east. The downtown grid sits on the higher ground of the peninsula, with streets running down to the port and marinas.
The waterfront is industrial and maritime. It holds the Port of Everett and Naval Station Everett, whose piers and basins read as sharp shapes against the bay. To the south, near Paine Field, stands the Boeing Everett Factory, known as the largest building in the world by volume, where wide-body jets are assembled. Between the water and the aircraft plant, residential neighbourhoods follow a mostly regular grid, broken by ravines, parks and the long line of Interstate 5.
